As with Windows 95, the Start menu hosts not only the applications that you install, but also the program elements of the Operating System. There are several new programs in the section as well as updates to many of the existing ones. To find out more, click on the one that interests you in the picture to the right. Each program group has its own section and then each program in the group has a separate page. As before we have concentrated on features new to Windows 98, but given a synopsis of programs that remain unchanged.

Accessibility

The Accessibility menu is a new one that adds in two features for helping you make your PC easier to access for those who have difficulties. In particular the Accessibility Wizard is in addition to the Accessibility Control Panel, offering different features.

Communications

Communications remain relatively unchanged, though the addition of the Dial-Up Server from the Windows 95 Plus! pack does enhance the Dial-Up Networking and ISDN is more fully integrated.

Entertainment

The Entertainment section becomes an even looser catch-all that covers the programs needed by the system for key multimedia features, like the CD Player and the ActiveMovie replacement for AVI player.

System Tools

The key part of the Windows programs, where you can perform all sorts of administrative tasks. Some of the standard items from Windows 95 have had an update, but there are plenty of brand new programs here too that form the cornerstone of much of the optimisation and improvement that Windows 98 can perform on your PC. In particular also the System Information program gives access to a host of other, advanced tools.
